3 Monster Friends [Voice] - Content Warning

[ The thing about having stunted growth, being raised by monsters, and then subsequently raised by a boy around your age, is that sometimes you miss out on being informed about key parts of life.

Arietta sniffles a few times before she manages to address the journal. ]

I'm 16 years old. I've bled before but this is the first time it's come from inside.

How is this normal?

[Hm. A bit of a late bloomer but it's not entirely abnormal for some girls to start so late]

It happens to every young girl when she comes to an appropriate age. It's called a menstrual cycle, or a 'period' in simpler terms. It's the physiological change that occurs in a woman's body that allows the body to become a fertile environment. Meaning that sexual reproduction and the fertilization of an egg is henceforth possible after a young lady has reached the appropriate age to mature and begun her own menstrual cycle.

The bleeding is what is referred to as menstruation. It can last up to five to seven days, though it varies as each woman has a different cycle. However, for each woman, it does occur every month, once a month. Menstruating is also a way to know if a woman is not pregnant, because she will continue her cycle if she isn't.

While the body goes through the menstrual cycle, each woman, again it varies, will experience some kind of physical disturbance. Cramps, emotional disturbances, headaches and even fevers often occur during this five days to a week long menstruation period.

Basically... what's happening is called a "period". Young girls start their period at young ages, from the age of nine all the way to sixteen, such as yourself. It means they are maturing and beginning the process of becoming women. Once a young girl begins her period, it means she is then able to become pregnant and have babies.

Were you able to understand that? [Said gently]

Were you able to understand the rest of it? [A beat] Also--have you placed something in your underwear to keep the blood from dripping down your legs? [This he's concerned about because she had no idea what a period was so has she even made an attempt to keep it from dripping--]

I tried to use bandages but it kept leaking, so now I'm staying on the toilet.

... Can you say the rest of it again?

[Poor girl] Would you like me to get you something so you don't have to stay on the toilet? Or would you prefer one of your housemates to get it? I can tell you what you need. [She can't stay there forever after all]

[And so he shuts his journal and heads on out to the store first. It takes him a little while to get there since he does have to grab a pack of pads (in which he has no shame of grabbing them and carrying them around) then find her house. When he gets there he makes sure to knock loudly so she hears before opening the door just a crack and calls for her to make sure this is the right place]

I'm in the bathroom...!

[ She's somewhat muffled due to being behind a door, but it's still easy to hear her. ]

[He figured she wouldn't have moved, not that he can necessarily blame her. He steps inside now though, taking off his shoes as to not be rude and walks towards the closed door]

Would it be all right if I came in to help you put this on? I can give you my jacket so you can cover yourself up if you'd like or I can hand you what you need through the door and tell you how to do it. [Sion really feels no shame in asking. Why? Because this kind of stuff never phases him in the slightest and he's a doctor! But if she's not comfortable with it he doesn't mind.]

It's alright. You can come in. I don't mind, and you can show me it.

[ She theoretically learned about human decency, but it's always been something she only really did because she was told to. ]

[And so he shall walk inside the bathroom, making sure to shut the door behind him.

...But then it dawns on him that he forgot to ask--] The underwear you had on, are they clean or do you need me to get you a new pair? [He can guess that she didn't take them off in time and are probably bloody but he has to make sure]

They got dirty. I think I need a new one.

Where's your room? I'll go get you a new pair.

[ And then she points to the IC correct one because what is actually determining whose room is which. ]

I'll be right back then. [AND SO HE WALKS OUT TO GO TO HER ROOM AND FETCH SOME CLEAN UNDERWEAR.

It doesn't take him but a moment before he comes back into the bathroom, with the new pair in hand, and kneels beside her, taking the little package of pads that he left on the sink. He shows them to her first]

These are called pads. They absorb the menstrual flow--blood so that you can stand without having the blood drip down your legs and through your underwear. When you wear it, you place it on top of your underwear... [He takes one pad out, unwraps it and peels off the paper, showing her the sticky side] This side is the side you place on the bottom of your underwear. It's somewhat sticky, like a sticker, so it'll stay in place. [Taking her underwear, he puts it in place, making sure she sees of course.

Paying attention Arietta? He's trying his best to tone down the smarts...]

[ She is! ]

... I think I get it. So do I just wash it later?

[He shakes his head as he peels off the other two little pieces of paper and shows her where to put the wings down on the other side]

No. After about two hours of wearing one of these, you'll need to replace it with a new one and throw the used one away. If you don't remove a used pad every few hours it may irritate and possibly cause an infection in the vaginal area. [Way to say that bluntly.

And now he'll hand her her underwear since he's finished putting the pad on] Here, you can put it on now. I imagine it'll feel weird at first but you'll adjust to it.
